Remanufactured transformers and the Ecodesign Directive

The Ecodesign Directive, which came into force on the 1st July 2015, is an EU legislation which requires energy related products to meet strict energy efficient requirements. The directive includes regulation on small, medium and large transformers placed on the market for the first time after the enforcement date. The aim of the Ecodesign directive is to eliminate the worst performing products from the market and reduce energy and resource consumption. The main focus is on the ‘use’ phase of the products lifecycle – but what about at the end of the product’s service life?

The term ‘Circular Economy’ has been discussed widely in the media over the last few years. The Ellen MacArthur foundation, a charity set up by the former British sailor in 2010, is dedicated to working with business and education to ‘accelerate the transition to a circular economy’.
